        Through erroneous modification of the species’ own germ line, aelin scientists gave rise to daemons, the grotesque nocturnal immortals that lust insatiably for aelin flesh and ultimately hunted the once-prosperous species near to extinction. Now sequestered to the topside of the sky island Alevaria, aelin must prepare defenses against the daemons’ nightly emergence from The Underside.

        Despite being arrogant and callous, Evánte possesses an uncanny though unrealized ability that allures all living beings including those from The Underside. He is subjected to a repulsive daemon-conversion ritual by a female daemon who botches the process, transforming them both into hybrids. Somehow, Evánte finds purpose caring for her resulting novel disease.

        For her cure, they turn to two busy human scientists down on planet Ithoalin. While a daemon–aelin war erupts back home, Evánte uses the scientists’ largely untested teleporter to gather various brain-invading symbiotes needed for her experimental cure from dangerous remote locations. Changed deeply by adventures, they must rush home to fight, but on which side?
